In reality the artist could have\u00a0seen African eunuchs, but the models for the women were probably prostitutes.<\/p>\n<p>Black and white eunuchs had\u00a0separate units at Topkapi Palace, not because of any notion that the races should be kept separate, but for the equally charming reason that black men were considered ugly and less of a temptation to the women they served. The women were all white for the same reason.
