Writing Keyword Articles

The success of online advertising has created demand for short, keyword-rich, content-light articles. These articles are used to create websites whose main purpose is to rank high in the search engines, draw in lots of people, and get them to click on ads. Cheesy? Yes. But cheese brings in opportunity. Someone has to write "keyword articles" for webmasters, and because speed, not skill, is of the essence, the field is wide open for beginning writers.

How much does it pay?

$2 to $3 for an article of 200 to 500 words. Most publishers will want you to do a batch of ten or so articles at once, so the dollars add up quickly.

What topics are keyword articles about?

High-revenue topics like loans, credit cards, car repair, and medical issues. You might also be able to find mid-level topics like child care and home repair. Keyword articles are almost never about fun topics like celebrities, style, and current events; there's no money in them. If you want to become a keyword article writer, prepare to be bored.

Where do I find calls for keyword article writers?

Look on free writer's boards. Many publishers won't come out and say they want keyword articles, since most writers don't know what they are. Look for ads that offer a low rate for batches of short articles and emphasize quick turnaround. A few online writers' agencies also specialize in writing keyword articles and will hire freelancers (this is you) to join their stable of writers.

Web Writing Job Sites
SEO Writing Job Sites - Job listings for two levels of online and SEO writing. The web writing page is for a slightly higher level of writing, but if you're a reasonably competent writer, you have an excellent chance of moving up from SEO work to web writing.

Confessions of a Keyword Writer

Freelancewriting.com - A busy site with several sections of classifieds. The low-/non-paying section has frequent calls for keyword article writers.

Craigslist - The Craigslist "writing/editing jobs" and "writing gigs" sections occasionally get requests for keyword article writers. Check as many cities as you have time for.

Elance has frequent calls for keyword article writers under Writing & Translation > Web Content, but I hesitate to send you there. Elance is an auction site (so it takes longer to be hired), and bidding on projects can cost money. It's a venue best left to established writers.
