There were 161 inventories in my original sample:
- 56 Muslim females
- 96 Muslim males
- 3 non-Muslim females
- 4 non-Muslim males
- 1 unknown
I removed the non-Muslim and unknown inventories because members of different religious groups dressed differently. Of the remaining Muslim inventories, I removed 4 Muslim male inventories because of oddities, complexities, and miscellaneous complications.
Feraces
Because women wore feraces in public for modesty, we think of them as a uniquely feminine garment. The data says otherwise:
Of the 56 Muslim women represented, 31 (55%) owned feraces. There were a total of 46 feraces, or 1.48 feraces per woman who owned a ferace. The rough average price of a woman’s ferace was 607 akçes.
Of the 96 Muslim men represented, 72 (75%) owned feraces. There were a total of 204 feraces, or 2.83 feraces per man who owned a ferace. The very rough average price for a man’s ferace was 823 akçes.
Zıbıns
Of the 56 Muslim women represented, 39 (70%) owned zıbıns. There were a total of 84 zıbıns, or 2.15 zıbıns per woman who owned a zıbın. The average price of a woman’s zıbın was 196 akçes.
Of the 96 Muslim men represented, 37 (39%) owned zıbıns. There were a total of 62 zıbıns, or 1.68 zıbıns per man who owned a zıbın.
Kaftans
Of the 56 Muslim women represented, 38 (68%) owned kaftans. There were a total of 117 kaftans, or 3.08 kaftans per woman who owned a kaftan. (The winner was İsmihan Hatun bt. İlyas, who had 19.) The average price of a woman’s kaftan was 713 akçes, but Fâtıma Hatun bt. Hasan’s 12,500-akçe serâser kaftan broke the curve. Take it out, and the average was 608 akçes.
Of the 96 Muslim men represented, 47 (49%) owned kaftans. There were a total of 112 kaftans, or 2.38 kaftans per man who owned a kaftan. (Mehmed Reis had 15.) The average price for a man’s kaftan was 653 akçes.
