These names are drawn from the Defter-i Mufassal-ı Livā-i Sivas, the 1574/1575 listing of every adult male (aged 15 and up) in Sivas Province, Turkey, and the taxes they owed. Armenian communities and Armenians living in Muslim communities were identified in the text, making it possible to tell Armenians from Muslims even when Armenians bore Turkish-derived names.
The names of men in Sivas Province show evidence of communities ethnic Armenians who lived under Turkish rule long enough to adopt some of the names of their Turkish neighbors. Unlike Arabic-derived names, which were strongly associated with Muslims, Turkish-derived names weren’t associated with any specific religion. They were easily understandable words in the common tongue, which helped them to cross ethnic lines. As a result, people of all ethnicities tended to start using Turkish-derived names as they settled into life among Turkish-speaking neighbors. In Sivas Province, quintessentially Armenian names like Kirakos, Mıgırdıç, and Serkis appear side-by-side with Turkish names like Aydın (“silver”), Karagöz (“dark-eyed”), and Tanrıvermiş (“given by God”).
The names are transcribed in the modern Turkish alphabet.
