This quilted garment is attributed to Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi (1207-1273), but it has the broad flap collar of a later century. The outer fabric is blue atlas (satin) silk.
The lining appears to be blue cotton. Interestingly, the garment is faced down the front with the same material as the outer shell, but the facing doesn’t continue along the lower hem.
The garment is described as a ferace, but the fitted waist, extra-long, tight sleeves, and sleeve slits at the shoulders are distinctly un-feracelike. The cut is typical of the outer kaftan worn by men throughout much of the Ottoman period as a daily overgarment.
Date: Indeterminate, but clearly post-13th century.
