Where I Went

Stuff that’s happened since I last posted in October 2023, in rough chronological order:

  • My father died (It was awful, I’m okay now)
  • Dove ever deeper into the Society for Creative Anachronisms
  • Like, way deeper
  • So deep
  • I’m a Herald at Large of the East Kingdom now
  • Health problems like whoa
  • Got a hysterectomy (A++, would recommend, resolved so many of my health problems)
  • New boyfriend
  • Was awarded the second-highest award in the East Kingdom for scholarship, the Order of the Maunche
    • For both my garb research and my name research
    • You’re supposed to get your Award of Arms and a silver-level award before you get a gold-level award, but I was in the SCA for, IDK, 15+ years? while doing research in my own quiet corner of the web and Facebook, so many of the people who are likely to write folks in for awards didn’t know I was around. A dear friend spent a few years coaxing me into volunteering as a herald and introducing me around to people outside my immediate field. I mentioned to the right person that I was doing a little side project on Minoan names, and suddenly a whole lot of people who were Very High in the College of Heralds took great interest in my websites and found that I had a 15+-year backlog of research on obscure non-European naming cultures, and that said research was high-quality, because FUCK YEAH I am a research goddess and I don’t care who hears me saying it. So they jumped me straight to the gold level.
    • Clearly I have a lot to say on the topic
    • The SCA is a large part of my life
    • I said I went deep
    • The people are awesome, everyone in the College of Heralds is awesome, the research culture among SCA heralds is awesome, I love all of you fucking nerds
    • You have to call me “Lady” now. It’s my right. I have a beautiful hand-drawn, hand-written scroll that says so
  • Moved house for the first time in 15+ years
  • Still getting used to the exoticism of life in small-town Massachusetts

A lot of my online effort has gone into my research sites, which I’ll list when I have the spoons.

Several months ago I noticed that the scripts that powered the navigation of my main website had ceased to work. I leapt into action and started rolling the content over into WordPress, which has many, many issues but is at least easy to navigate, and then got distracted by moving house. (Also by new boyfriend.) My current goal: Rolling over the rest of the content and launching the revised site before I get distracted again. I’m going to fail, but wish me well.
